KRAEFT hydraulic applications in ships
In ship technology, hydraulics play a decisive role in the efficiency and safety of modern ships.
We offer our customers tailor-made solutions for all hydraulic systems from the start of the project through to delivery. In addition to the central hydraulics, this also includes rudder systems, bow thrusters, stern door hydraulics and much more. We can also provide all the hydraulic pipework required on ships on a turnkey basis.
Central hydraulics in shipbuilding
The central hydraulic system usually combines several systems, making it an important component of the ship's on-board technology. We offer standard power units in various sizes as well as custom solutions for problematic installation situations.
The design and construction of the central hydraulic system takes your wishes and requirements into account. Built-in structural tanks are equipped with special cover solutions for easy installation/removal and easy access for maintenance purposes.
Our power units can also be supplied with motor starters and control electronics. In addition to this, we can also connect the system to your own hydraulics or to external hydraulics (e.g. an on-board crane).
We manufacture power units for a wide range of other ship technology equipment. Our strength lies in designing, constructing and installing these Hydraulic Power Units (HPU).

Bow thrusters
When manoeuvring in confined spaces or difficult conditions, bow thrusters are indispensable. It all comes down to the quality of the systems here. KRAEFT bow thrusters have a light metal housing with a flange and pipe connection. The propeller is made of bronze. Test reports and certificates are, of course, available for all bow thrusters. We supply these in power classes from 25 kW - 145 kW.
Rudder systems
When it comes to rudder systems, we offer design solutions for every application. The number of rudder blades is irrelevant here. Whether it’s a 1, 2 or 3-blade rudder machine, we offer the right solution for every system. Even double action rudder machines are part of our product range.
If necessary, the rudder system can be designed and supplied with a suitable deflection. Designs with double rod cylinders are also possible, as are designs in materials suitable for your application.
Rudder system approval in accordance with a classification society can also be carried out at the customer's request.
Stern door hydraulics
It is often necessary to use a stern door when loading and unloading ships. For this application, we can provide you with the right cylinders with watertight ball gimbals. The materials for the stern door hydraulics are selected so that they can withstand seawater for years. The cylinders are tailored to the required forces and can be connected to a central hydraulic system developed by us or an existing central hydraulic system. Custom special solutions are also possible here.
Service & maintenance
Maintaining hydraulic systems is crucial for ship safety. Regular inspections and maintenance work are necessary to ensure that all components are working properly and that there are no leaks or other problems.
Our services start right after the first commissioning. We offer you maintenance contracts to ensure optimum capacity utilisation and a long service life for your system. Our service team carries out professional, fast and reliable maintenance and repairs on site.
